Within bloodlines, yes it is not only possible, but is a strongly supported theory in the medical and physiological fields. Some suspect that "character " genes like depression, suicide, promiscuity, alcoholism, heart attacks, high blood pressure and other 'flaws' are genetically handed down. Some seem to be able to skip a generation or two but usually carry over to the consecutive generations. A problem is not considered genetic if at least three generations have not hand the problem. Example, if your Grandfather died of a heart attack and your father died of a heart attack, your chances of having heart problems are several times increased. On the other hand if your Great Grandfather died of cancer but your Grandfather and father did not, then the likely hood of it being a genetic disorder is minimal. Also keep it mind a lot of disorders, both mental and physical can also be a result of environment or life choices. Just because your predestined to maybe have cancer, that does not mean you will 100% have cancer. You can also do things to prevent or stop some flaws from coming about. Some disorders like drug addiction are 100% preventable if you don't use drugs. If you know your suspect to having a genetic disorder do the things you can to keep from being more likely to develop these "hand-me-downs ". If your family has a history of alcohol abuse, stay away from alcohol. |
