Question: Why was morphine addiction more prevalent among southern white women than any other group in the 1930's?

I was unaware of this statistic, but it makes sense. Same reason why many housewives had addiction & alcohol issues before the ERA - personal frustration & doctors prescribing crap so wives would "behave ". Let's face it, if you lived in a time when your husband could spank you & treat you like a pet, you would have issues too. Other ethnicities at the time in the south had more survival issues to worry about...both partners often toiled very long hours to merely survive, exhaustion doesn't leave much time & poverty doesn't leave much cash for drugs...

They used to prescribe it to women for " hysteria " ( PMS) a lot of women got hooked
